Passover | Unleavened Bread Day 1 & 7 | First Fruits | Counting of the Omer | Shavuot

Passover week includes a multitude of elements. The festival of Passover itself celebrates the sparing of the Israelites from the plague of death poured out on Egypt and is fulfilled in the sacrifice of Yeshua, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. The feast of Unleavened Bread requires holy convocations on days one and seven. This celebration commemorates the Exodus. During this time, we do not eat leavened bread in a physical representation of the spiritual concept of removing sin from our lives after salvation. First Fruits is the giving of the first of the crop to the Lord in the Torah symbolizing the idea that we should bring the first and the best to the Lord as an offering, and Yeshua was the fulfillment of First Fruits in being the first to rise from the dead. The Counting of the Omer begins on the day after the seventh day Shabbat which falls in the week of Passover and continues for 50 days, linking the sacrifice of Yeshua during Passover to the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and the Ruach in the New Covenant during Shavuot.

First Fruits

“And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest,” (Leviticus 23:9-10)

First Fruits is the giving of the first of the crop to the Lord in the Torah symbolizing the idea that we should bring the first and the best to the Lord as an offering, and Yeshua was the fulfillment of First Fruits in being the first to rise from the dead.

Shavuot & the Counting of the Omer

Shavuot, also known as Pentecost, is the celebration of giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and the Holy Spirit in the New Covenant during Shavuot in Acts 2. You are invited to join us in this festival on Sunday, May 28th to celebrate Shavuot. More information on this event will be coming soon!

“You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there shall be seven complete sabbaths.” (Leviticus 23:15)

Below is a calendar marking each day of the omer. In addition, each day as you recognize the counting of the omer, whether by counting grain or marking your calendar, recite liturgy from the Counting of the Omer Daily Prayer Guide.

Jump to 9:30 on the video to hear a short explanation from Dr. Michael Brown on which Sabbath to start the counting of the omer (See Leviticus 23:11)!

"When the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey..."
(Exodus 3:7-8)

As we finish celebrating the feast of Passover, we will begin counting the omer for 50 days until the festival of Shavuot (also known as Pentecost). In this new season of preparing our hearts for Shavuot, this inspiring thought arose! There is this beautiful theological concept of going from Egypt to the Promised Land or going from the bondage of sin and shame into the promises of God. The spiritual Promised Land is inaugurated in our lives the minute we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and begin living in the promises of God here and now. As we walk in the commandments of God, the blessings and promises of God increase! The degree to which we walk in the Freedom of God and His Ways has a direct impact on the promises of God manifested in our lives, here and now. The fullness of the Lord's promises await the age to come where we will experience each and every promise of God to the fullest extent. As we count the omer for the next 50 days, we invite you to join us in counting the promises of God for each of those associated days. Start each day’s reading by inviting God’s presence to meet with you as you study His word.
