Rosh Chodesh (head of the month) is the day a
new Jewish month begins. A new month begins when the first crescent of the
new moon appears in the sky. Rosh Chodesh is also considered a minor festival.
Because the Jewish calendar is based on the cycles of
the moon and then adjusted according to the seasons, Jewish months begin on
the new moon. In biblical times, the Israelites made sacrificial offerings
and blew the Shofar (ram's horn) to mark the day. In rabbinic times,
bonfires were lit on mountaintops to announce the arrival of the new moon.
