“Let them praise His Name with dancing…”
Psalm 149:3
Hanukkah 2005
Hebraic (or Davidic) dance is meant to
be a physical expression of praise and worship to God. Many
of the dances performed by the dance team are taken from
traditional Israeli folkdances. Other dances have been choreographed
by Messianic dancers, some of which are from The Harvest.
Like worship songs, dances
fit with the spirit of worship – some are slow and reverential, and others
are fast-paced and joyful. Whatever the theme, Hebraic dance provides
an opportunity for women in the community to come together to worship God.
There is no emphasis on one dancer in particular, but we come together
as a whole to offer praise to God and lead the people into worship along
with the worship team. Dances are an integral part of the worship experience.
The feast days in particular give the dance team an opportunity to express
through specially-choreographed dances the spiritual emphasis of each day
we celebrate.
Currently, only women are
invited to join the dance team. The advanced dance team dances during the
corporate worship. Those who have a desire to join the team may do so once
they have completed the beginning, intermediate, and advanced training
classes.
We do have a couple of simple
congregational line dances that we do every so often during the corporate
worship time. Everyone laughs as we all enter into this festive time with
one another. These times of dancing together produce a sense of community
and really help everyone enter into the celebratory nature of the
feast days.
In addition to the adult
dance classes, we also provide a dance class for young girls to learn how
to express their praise to God through dance. Those who join the practice
times each Shabbat before service, will be invited to dance in the front
of the santuary in the girls dance circle.
